How has the representation of transvestites changed throughout film and the media, with particular reference to 'Kinky Boots'?
First Paragraph- Kinky boots is a controversial comedy drama film about a transvestite who is trying to find his identity. This film links in with the views in society today, audiences have become more accepting. Cross-dressers are still stereotyped as ‘abnormal’. The film follows many of the stereotypes of transvestites although one is considered the hero of ‘Kinky Boots’.
Second Paragraph- The representation of gender and sexuality in comedy. This is an alternative comedy, experimental. Such as ‘Goon Show’ (1950s) Mention the theorist Steven Neale- men can be the subject of voyeuristic looking also. ‘Masculinity as spectacle’ (1983)
Third Paragraph- The historical context- ‘Some like it hot’ (1959) featuring Marilyn Monroe. Why does it link to the contemporary text? - Both consist of cross-dressing in a comical way- away of dealing with the issue and letting the audience know more about it.
